GERD
Frequent heartburn could be a sign of something more serious: an esophageal
disorder called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). With GERD the
contents of the stomach reflux, or leak, back up into the esophagus, causing
irritation. This can lead to indigestion, chest pain, difficulty swallowing,
hoarseness and chronic cough.
Left untreated, the lining of the esophagus can become irritated and begin
to resemble the stomach lining, a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus,
