Health Foundation awards $11,000 in scholarships
King’s Daughters Health Foundation recently awarded $11,000 in college scholarships to area students pursuing college degrees.
The Edna and Mildred Monk Memorial Nursing Scholarship was awarded to five students pursuing a degree in nursing. The $1,000 scholarship provides assistance with the first year’s tuition, room, board, books and lab fees and is open to dependents of King’s Daughters employees.
This year’s scholarship recipients include:
- Ty Adkins, son of Phoebe Adkins and Keith Adkins. A graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, Adkins plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University.
- Olivia Gentry, daughter of David and Bethany Gentry. A graduate of Chesapeake High School, Gentry plans to attend Shawnee State University.
- Sarah McLeod, daughter of Tom and Leslee McLeod. A graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, McLeod plans to attend the University of Kentucky.
- Lydia O’Nan, daughter of Bernard and Michelle O’Nan. A graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, McLeod plans to attend the University of Louisville.
- Sarah Shavers, daughter of Jason Shavers and Patricia Shaver. A graduate of Boyd County High School, Shavers plans to attend Ohio University Southern.
“Through the generosity of Edward Monk, we were able to increase the number of scholarship recipients this year from four to five,” said Elaine Corbitt, executive director of community relations. “We cannot thank Mr. Monk enough for his generosity and commitment to nursing’s future,” she said.
The Boyd County Medical Society awarded $6,000 in scholarships to four students, representing the four high schools in the Ashland-Russell metro area. The $1,500 scholarship provides assistance with the first year’s tuition, room, board, books and lab fees and is open to students pursuing any field of study. Recipients are:
- Hannah Blaine, daughter of Terry and Regina Blaine. A graduate of Russell High School, Blaine plans to attend the University of Kentucky.
- Tyriq Duckwyler, son of Tuni Khounlavong. A graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, Duckwyler plans to attend the University of Kentucky.
- Sydney Kay Ekers, daughter of Bobby and Michelle Ekers. A graduate of Fairview High School, Ekers plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University.
- Zachary Farrell, son of Annette and Danny Ferguson and David Farrell. A graduate of Boyd County High School, Farrell plans to attend Northern Kentucky University.
“These scholarships represent a significant commitment on the part of the Monk family and the Boyd County Medical Society,” Corbitt said. “It’s our hope that these students will enjoy tremendous success in college and return to the community to make an even greater impact on Ashland and throughout the entire region,” she said.
