Athletic pursuits are an important part of life, teaching youth and adults
alike discipline, hard work, and camaraderie. But sports activities can
be hard on the body, leading to injuries affecting the bones, joints,
ligaments and tendons. Athletes are susceptible to stress fractures, torn/stretched
ligaments and tendons, sprains, strains, and more. The King's Daughters
Sports Medicine team works to reduce the chance of injury and to provide
rapid treatment to injured athletes to allow quick, and safe, return to sport.
Our Team
The King’s Daughters Sports Medicine team is comprised of people
from different areas who all have the same goal of treating and preventing
athletic injuries – sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons,
athletic trainers, chiropractors, physical therapists and more.
Sports Medicine Physicians
Sports med physicians can be either family physicians or orthopedic surgeons.
Regardless, both disciplines receive additional training in identifying,
treating and preventing athletic-related injuries.

Athletic Trainers
Athletic trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals
who collaborate with physicians and specialize in injury and illness prevention
in order to optimize physical activity and participation in athletics.
They must graduate from an accredited program and be state licensed and
board certified in athletic training. In addition, they must complete
yearly education requirements in order to stay up-to-date on the latest
athletic training advancements.
Athletic trainers are an essential component to our sports medicine team.
They assess athletes for potential injuries through physical exams; design
and implement conditioning programs; provide education regarding nutrition
and health to prevent injury; examine injured athletes and recommend proper
treatment; provide immediate and emergent care when necessary; determine
the proper treatment and therapy following an injury; and help athletes
return to sports after an injury, while also preventing future injuries.
King’s Daughters currently has athletic trainers in 14 local high
schools and 2 colleges.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractors use non-invasive approaches, including manipulations or chiropractic
adjustments, to care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders
of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints.
Chiropractic treatment for sports injuries can help improve range of motion
by alleviating stiffness and pain; reduce the use of medication for pain
management; and improve muscle tone and blood flow to injured areas. Depending
on the severity of the injury, it could even be an alternative treatment
option prior to surgery.
Chiropractor
William Nichols, D.C., works with our sports medicine team to assist athletes in returning to
sports quickly. Dr. Nichols sees patients at King’s Daughters Interventional
Spine, 617 23rd St., Suite 8B, Ashland.
Ortho-Specific Physical Therapy
Physical therapy plays a crucial part in recovering from sports injuries.
The physical therapists at King’s Daughters create specialized training
regiments tailored to treat your specific injury. In addition, they help
with pain relief, strength building, flexibility and injury prevention.
Community Involvement
An important aspect of the King’s Daughters Sports Medicine program
is community involvement and providing programs to help local schools
and their athletes.
ImPACT Concussion Testing
A concussion is one of the most serious and prevalent medical problems
in high school athletics today. A concussion is common, but it is often
difficult to diagnose and treat. The King's Daughters ImPACT program provides
coaches and athletic trainers with information that can help take the
guesswork out of concussion management and promote safe return-to-play
decisions for athletes. King’s Daughters currently partners with
18 schools to provide this service and since 2015, we have completed over
13,000 baseline tests and over 2,000 post-injury tests.
Free Sports Physicals
A sports physical is often required in order to participate in sports or
other extracurricular activities, including band. We’re pleased
to provide more than 2000 free sports physicals each year in Kentucky
and Ohio. The free sports physicals are for student athletes ages 13 to
19 and are performed by athletic trainers and orthopedic staff.
